STG - Sonoma County

Russian River Valley Merlot

The Alexander Valley Viticultural Area generally follows the Russian River through the heart of northern Sonoma County, abutting the Chalk Hill appellation south of Healdsburg. The growing area is relatively warm; the river offers a cooling influence. Merlot is not widely planted in the Alexander Valley and the variety is in great demand. The grapes secured for the STG are of exceptional character, from mature vines which were harvested by hand.

After crushing, the fermenting wine was pumped over the "cap" of the skins twice a day to extract maximum color. Following primary fermentation, the wine was racked into 50-gallon American oak barrels and underwent 100% malolactic fermentation during the long months of ageing. The finished wine has a deep garnet hue and openly fruity aromas; its round, supple flavors show attractive berry fruitiness and hints of oak, with a soft, lingering finish.

About the Vineyard
The STG Russian River Valley Merlot is made from grapes from Domaine St. George estate vineyards, located on a hillside just behind the winery. There, several factors combine to create the ideal growing conditions for high-quality Merlot. Not only are the vineyards located in the warmer part of the Russian River Valley, but they also benefit from a west-facing orientation, thus maximizing sun exposure and flavor development. Bilateral cordon trellising and drip irrigation using the LISA (Low Impact Sustainable Agriculture) system of grape growing gives the fruit an added advantage. Additionally, the vineyard's red, rocky soil retains the heat while still allowing for adequate drainage.

Winemaker's Notes:
This classic hillside Merlot exhibits deep, brick-red hues and opens with aromas of sweet plums, cherry and cassis. Moderate warm summer, a long growing season, and an early bud break help maximize the flavor development. Barrel aging adds suble hints of toasty oak and warm brown spice to the mix. A full body and long, lingering finish are the result of extended maceration during the fermentation process. Wonderful with a variety of foods such as lamb, beef, or a hearty stew, this Merlot can be enjoyed now, but will continue to improve with age for enjoyment in the future.
